Smog in Punjab: A Growing Health Emergency

Smog in Punjab: A Growing Health Emergency

Every winter, Punjab, particularly, Lahore gets engulfed in thick smog, a toxic mix of fog, vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, and hazardous pollutants from crop stubble burning. Between October and February, stagnant cold air traps these pollutants, turning cities into gas chambers.

Health Impacts:

Smog triggers respiratory problems, asthma, allergies, throat and eye irritation, and fatigue. The fine particles (PM2.5) in polluted air can enter the bloodstream, raising risks of heart and lung diseases. Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised are most at risk.

Prevention and Protection:

  • Limit exposure: Avoid outdoor activity during high-smog hours.
  • Protect yourself: Use N95 masks and indoor air purifiers.
  • Stay healthy: Maintain proper hydration, eat antioxidant-rich foods, and use saline sprays for nasal irritation.
  • Seek care early: Persistent cough or breathlessness warrants medical attention.

The Need for Collective Action!

The government has introduced vehicle emission checks, and bans on crop stubble burning. We, as citizens, can help by prioritizing public transport, maintaining vehicles, planting trees, and spreading awareness.

Clean air is a shared responsibility. With small, consistent steps, we can make our winters healthier and clearer again.
